Applied Aero - Modified StarWars Ship
Extensive CFD analysis made on the two ship designs. The modified ship (triangle shaped opening in the wing) as well as the unmodified ship (rectangular opening) were tested at multiple yaw angles, at many speeds.
The main goal was to change the ship in a way that would benefit the ship in the atmosphere. Some slower speed smaller scale wind tunnel experiments were done to get general ideas and see the flow around the ship in real life. However the CFD simulations made up the majority of the project. Speeds as low as M0.3, and as high as M10 were simulated for both ships and the different yaw angles. These results were then compared to see if the modification was worth the time and work required to do.
A final part of the experiment was to use a much smaller scaled model in the supersonic wind tunnel. The unmodified design was sent to test in the wind tunnel and instantly broke off the tips of the wings. Showing that the design changes made would both benefit the efficiency of the spacecrafts atmospheric flight and the structural integrity of the ship as a whole
